Addition to the "Maestro's" original good advice Tor or Firefox

Tor Browser v10.0... Preferences update...edit 26/11/20

  • Preferences/Applications
  • Preferences/Options

1- Top right of your TorBrowser, click on the 3 horizontal lines Then select "Options" (Preferences on some browsers)

2- Select the "Privacy and Security" screen on the left

3- Scroll down to the "Permissions" settings

4- Click on settings for "Location" Main table should be blank Tick "block new requests" Click on "Save Changes"

5- Same for "Camera"

6- Same for "Microphone"

7- Same for "Virtual Reality"

8- Different for "Media Autoplay" Here we change Block Audio to Block Audio and Video

9- Optional Unless you need them Should be done last Click on "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" Changing this will get you a message saying “Firefox must restart to enable this feature.” There was a bug that after clicking on “Restart Firefox now” the Tor browser closes and you got the message “Your Tor browser profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.” wait a few seconds and restart your Browser manually. (may be fixed, I haven't noticed it lately)

I'll be damned if I give Permission to an external request!

Saving your Config/Preferences

I got to thinking, well where does Tor Browser save these changes, there must be a preference file created some where, so I looked and found the prefs.js file.

You will have to set the file manager preference to view hidden files

In Tails it will be located in Home/.tor-browser/profile.default/prefs.js

it is a small file around 281 Bytes or so and you can view the contents in text editor.

Now, When you open your browser and make the changes to your about:config, Options/Preferences, that is where they will be saved. The prefs.js file should now be somewhere around 9.0 kB

You can now save a copy of this file to your persistent volume. Next time you start Tails just open your file manager, choose view hidden files, navigate to your saved copy of prefs.js and overwrite the prefs.js file in Home/.tor-browser/profile.default/

You can now start the Tor Browser with all the preferences already set.
